Discover the Universe

Important Types of Astronomy Today

There are many types of astronomy. In fact, there are endless types of it as we just discovered nothing of the Universe. The universe is bigger than our imagination. There are billions of stars in each galaxy (about 100 billion stars). The universe is consists of billions of galaxies (about 100-200 billion galaxies).

If we go only to the nearest star to our sun, it’s located at 4 light-years away. With the use of our latest and fastest space crafts, it will take 70,000 years for us to reach there.

We have discovered thousands of planets, stars, and galaxies yet. With the discoveries, we have classified all of them in the right category to set discoveries in the right place.

Let’s first define Astronomy

Astronomy Definition according to BangAstro

Astronomy is the revelation of the mystery appearing in the night sky.

Astronomy Definition by NASA

The study of stars, planets, and space.

There are two mega types of astronomy

  1. Observational Astronomy
  2. Theoretical Astronomy

Before moving to the main types of astronomy. Let’s clear about observational astronomy and theoretical astronomy. As both of these types are different in some forms and combined in many matters.

Observational Astronomy

Observational astronomy what we observe about planets, stars, and galaxies. It includes observations from human eyes and also close observations from probes and technical machinery.

Theoretical Astronomy

Science predicted lots of things about the birth of the universe. Such things never happened in the presence of science. For example, how star born and came to the end. It consists of theories like other stars obey the same things that astronomers noticed. Such astronomy called theoretical astronomy.

Important Types of Astronomy by subject

Let’s break the main types of Astronomy.

Planetary Astronomy

It’s also called planetary science. It includes the study of planets. It obtained information like how the planets formed and how it comes to end. Planetary astronomy studies the structure of the planet. There are billions of billions of planets throughout the universe.

Stellar Astronomy

Steller astronomy provides information about the black holes, nebulae, white dwarfs and supernova. The purpose of stellar astronomy is to study physical and chemical processes that occur in the universe.

Solar Astronomy

It’s the study of a single star. By studying and learning about the star, we can imagine how it’s affecting its planets and how it can impact in the near future. Our sun is the nearest star to Earth. By studying our sun, we can learn lots of things about the surface and structure of the star and can compare it to the other stars.

Galactic Astronomy

It deals with the study of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Milky way is our home galaxy and possibly it consists of more than 100 billion stars.

Extragalactic astronomy

It involves the study of objects outside of our galaxy. It studies about galaxies and classified every discovered galaxy into its type. Most of the galaxies are divided into spiral, elliptical and irregular galaxies.

It’s the study of the history of our universe to its present time. It consists of possibilities that occur in the past with the universe like Big Bang. It gets information deeply about the universe.

Beside it, there are also other types of astronomy but it relates to the branches of science like physics, chemistry, and biology as astrophysics, astrochemistry, and astrobiology respectively.
